Art work valuation

art-pieceOn top of providing expert jewellery valuations, we can also provide you with an appraisal of your most cherished artworks. Having art work appraised is a logical and important step to make sure that the item is fully covered in the event of loss or theft. With there being many variables that make up an art piece, having it professionally appraised is no mean feat. It will require in depth research, and an understanding of the item’s particular market.

What happens during art work valuation?

Providing you with an art piece appraisal will require identification of the overall piece – who made it, where it was created, and when was it finished. Our valuation experts will:

  • Note the item’s creator, and identify it from their portfolio.
  • Inspect the item to see how good of a condition it is in.
  • Take photos for further identification purposes.
  • Inspect the item to note any watermarks. For items like vases, this will usually be the maker’s mark.
  • Cross checked against an extensive database to make sure it is genuine, and to note its copy number.

As many art pieces are copied over time, this cross checking is vital. For newer pieces, it is very rare that they are replicated to such an extent as older art works.

Benefits of having your art works valued

Determining the worth of art works is purely done for insurance purposes. Whilst we live in a safer world than previously, the market for stolen art works is still active, and particularly targets older art pieces. It is also useful for estate and capital gains purposes, as many people are often unaware of how much their cherished painting or dainty items are actually worth.
